The ladies finished off the season in fine style by wrapping up Division 3 and a promotion with a victory over North Kildare to add to their earlier cup success. After starting the season at a canter but having a blip in the middle, the ladies were determined to gain promotion after missing out so narrowly last year. It came down to a rematch of the cup final to decide the league.
On a cold, windy, misty, autumnal morning, the ladies headed down the M4 to Kilcock to take on North Kildare for the third time this season. Despite the wet conditions, play started on time after Tanya won the toss and chose to set a score. She opened the batting with Vanessa and they worked hard for their runs with a very slow outfield owing to the long grass and wet weather. Knowing it would dry up for the second innings, they pushed hard to post a competitive total but boundaries were hard to come by. With Tanya out and the score on 57-1 after 10 overs, there was no panic. Vanessa was playing the most stylish shots of her season (must be the bat) and with the capabilities of Jingram, Carol (45*) and Aisling “Biggie Small” Stokes in the batting order, there was no need. The 20 overs finished with Railway on 115 for 3.
After sending Twitter updates to Pat, the ladies took to the field to defend the total knowing that North Kildare had a strong batting line up and the outfield was drying fast. The first breakthrough took some time to come but it eventually did from the bowling of Sarah “Little Lambo” Ingram (2-12). Nothing like a few wickets to perk you up when you’re not well! The ever reliable Mhairi, Niamh (2-13) and Aisling S bowled very well picking up more wickets and restricting North Kildare to 87 off their 20 overs even giving a cracking catch to skipper MacArthur. Ailbhe in particular had a busy day in the field.
The ladies finished the season with a percentage of 71.25 and Carol with a batting average of 113.33. Bring on division 2!
